The Rev’d Joseph Malcolm (Sonny) Browne, III was called to be rector of the parish by Bishop Daniel
and the Vestry in the Spring of 2004.
Fr. Sonny was raised in Bertie County, North Carolina, attending Kelford Baptist Church. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History and Geography in 1999 and Master of Arts in Teaching in 2001. In August 2001, Sonny moved to Alexandria, Virginia to begin studies at the Virginia Theological Seminary. Seminarians work in a parish as part of their studies; this work is called “field education.” Sonny’s field education was at Grace Church, Russell Road in Alexandria, Virginia. He also served as a summer intern at Saint Paul’s Church in Greenville, NC. His Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or work in a hospital/clinical environment was done at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC. Following graduation from Virginia Theological Seminary, Fr. Sonny moved to Chocowinity and began work as rector on July 5th, 2004. In addition to his responsibilities as rector, Fr. Sonny serves in the following capacities: Trinity Center Board Member (until 2008), Archdeacon (assists bishop with administration of deacons), and Diocese East Carolina Executive Council.
